7 Signs Your Septic Tank Is Full

Last updated September 23, 2026

A full septic tank rarely fails all at once. These are the signs to watch for.

  1. Several drains are slow at the same time: sinks, shower and toilet, not just one fixture.
  2. Gurgling sounds from drains or the toilet after flushing.
  3. The toilet backs up or flushes weakly.
  4. Sewage comes up through the lowest drain in the house, often the floor drain in the bathroom or laundry area, especially after heavy rain.
  5. A strong sewage smell near the tank, the drains or outside the house.
  6. Wet or soggy ground, or unusually green grass, over the tank area.
  7. The tank has not been emptied in five years or more.

One slow drain, or all of them?

If only one fixture is affected, you probably have a clog and need declogging. If several are affected, the tank is the likely cause and you need siphoning.

What not to do

Do not pour muriatic acid, caustic soda or other harsh chemicals into the toilet or drains to "clear" the problem. They damage pipes, kill the bacteria that break down waste in the tank, and can burn the workers who later empty it. Reduce water use until the tank is emptied, and call a provider.
