Siphoning vs Desludging vs Declogging: Which Septic Service Do You Need?

Last updated September 23, 2026

When the toilet backs up or the drains start to smell, most people call "a malabanan" and ask for siphoning. But siphoning, desludging and declogging are different jobs, and paying for the wrong one wastes money.

Siphoning (sipsip poso negro)

A vacuum truck pumps the contents of your septic tank (poso negro) out through a hose. This is what you need when the tank itself is full. A typical household tank usually takes one truckload; large or neglected tanks may need more than one trip.

Desludging

Desludging is the term used by LGUs, water districts and environmental regulations for the same pump-out, with an emphasis on removing the settled sludge at the bottom of the tank and taking it to a proper septage treatment facility. When you hire anyone to empty your tank, ask where they dispose of the septage. A responsible operator will tell you.

Declogging

Declogging clears a blocked pipe, toilet, sink or floor drain using rods, augers or water jetting. It does not empty the tank. If the real problem is a full tank, declogging only helps for a short time before the blockage returns.

Which one do you need?

  • One fixture is slow or blocked and everything else drains normally: most likely a clog. Ask for declogging.
  • Several fixtures are slow at the same time, you hear gurgling, or sewage comes up through the lowest floor drain: most likely a full tank. Ask for siphoning/desludging.
  • The tank has not been emptied in five years or more: plan a siphoning regardless of symptoms.

If you are not sure, describe the symptoms when you call. Most operators can tell you over the phone which service fits.
